Flag Day salute to employers supporting our military

Since Sept. 11, 2001, many men and women have volunteered to join the U.S. military. In fact, today’s armed services are composed of all volunteers, unlike the past when there was a universal draft.

The women and men who choose to serve are our nation’s finest. Patriotic employers such as PSEG enable service members to be “twice the citizen” – holding down their regular jobs, as well as serving in the Guard or Reserves.  These service members have been deployed multiple times for extended periods disrupting their civilian lives and impacting their employers and loved ones, who often are left to do double-duty while they are gone.

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, ESGR, is a Department of Defense activity that works with employers and service members.  It was my pleasure to recently award one of PSE&G’s employees, Jody M. Viviani, a distribution team leader in gas operations, with the prestigious ESGR Patriot Award.  Jody was nominated by Army Specialist and fellow employee Kuan Yang, who serves in the Army Reserves. As his manager, Jody has kept tabs on his service, enabling him to attend drills and meet his military obligations, while preserving his job at PSE&G.

As a retired Colonel, I appreciate PSEG’s strong commitment to military personnel. Besides supporting those who currently serve, the company also has a long history of hiring and supporting veterans and recognizing the unique set of skills they bring to the workforce.

Since today is Flag Day, it’s the perfect opportunity to thank all those who serve or have served and the families and companies who support them.

Colonel Carl A. Singer U.S. Army (retired) - ESGR Passaic County Coordinator
