PSE&G’s ongoing infrastructure initiatives are building a stronger, more resilient energy system — helping New Jersey customers count on reliable service every day and when severe weather puts it to the test.
When you flip a switch, turn up the heat or start your day at work, you expect the energy you need to be there. What you may not see is the people, planning and work happening every day to make that reliable service possible.
At PSE&G, we continue to strengthen and modernize the infrastructure and systems that serve 2.4 million electric customers and approximately 1.9 million natural gas customers across New Jersey. Over the last decade, we’ve completed $30 billion in electric and gas projects, with nearly 75% focused on improving reliability and resiliency.
Our customers are seeing the results.
Building on lessons from severe weather
September is National Preparedness Month and the peak of Atlantic hurricane season — a timely reminder of why resilient infrastructure matters.
Superstorm Sandy was a turning point for our company. In the years since, we have focused on the reliability and resiliency of our equipment and systems and seen real results.
How is PSE&G strengthening electric reliability?
Prioritizing reliability means replacing and upgrading the poles, wires, substations and other equipment embedded in our communities before problems occur. That helps prevent interruptions, support faster restoration and strengthen the electric system against severe weather.
Since 2023, just under 22,000 poles have been proactively replaced through July 2026, resulting in a 50% improvement in reliability across the 20 circuits with the highest number of pole replacements compared to their 2020-2024 average.
We’re seeing similar results from other electric infrastructure improvements. Thirty-two circuits upgraded with new overhead infrastructure experienced 37% fewer outages.
And on circuits upgraded through our Infrastructure Advancement Program, customers are experiencing, on average, 22% fewer outage incidents, with 23% fewer customers affected.
We’ve also completed six new high-capacity electric stations since 2023, replacing aging equipment, reducing the risk of system overloads and adding capacity for our customers’ changing energy needs and more solar generation.

That includes raising 42 substations above Superstorm Sandy flood levels and installing more than 1,500 smart switching devices that can help crews identify problems and reroute power during outages. These switches also support every day reliability by limiting the number of customers impacted by an incident. These switches have helped improve system reliability by over 16% since being fully commissioned in 2022.
Together, these initiatives mean fewer interruptions, stronger performance when severe weather strikes and a more reliable electric system for the homes, businesses and communities that depend on it.

How is PSE&G building a more reliable natural gas system?
Approximately 1.9 million customers rely on our natural gas system to heat their homes, provide hot water, cook meals and run their businesses. The same proactive approach to system reliability is critically important to help ensure natural gas is safely delivered when customers need it.

These programs help us deliver safe, reliable service today while preparing the system to serve our customers for years to come.”

Since 2016, we’ve upgraded more than 1,655 miles of gas mains across more than 340 municipalities, replacing aging gas infrastructure with modern, more durable materials materials. The new infrastructure also helps our crews operate, maintain and respond to emergencies more effectively.
Over the next three years, we plan to replace approximately 525 additional miles of cast-iron and unprotected steel gas mains in more than 70 New Jersey communities.
And we’ve made this progress while maintaining the lowest residential gas rates in the region.

Our new substation in Livingston is one example of how infrastructure improvements across New Jersey are strengthening reliability and resiliency. Livingston Police Chief Gary Marshuetz has seen the impact firsthand.

That value is tangible statewide where investments have been completed: fewer and shorter electric outages, safe and reliable natural gas service and systems that are better prepared for severe weather and New Jersey’s changing energy needs.
How are PSE&G infrastructure upgrades preparing New Jersey for what’s ahead?
We’ll continue modernizing the electric grid with smarter technology, strengthening circuits and replacing aging gas infrastructure to meet New Jersey’s changing energy needs.
Ultimately, infrastructure initiatives aren’t about the equipment. They’re about what reliable energy makes possible for the people who depend on it and connecting communities that are better prepared when severe weather arrives.
