Empowering women: Redefining women’s role in green economy

The future of energy is in clean, sustainable solutions, but realizing this vision hinges on having a skilled workforce. Addressing the skills shortage in the clean energy sector, particularly for women candidates, remains a pressing challenge.

A 2023 LinkedIn report revealed that the demand for green talent has surged, outpacing the availability of skilled workers. In New Jersey, the Council on the Green Economy found that women are especially underrepresented, holding only 17% to 28% of green jobs, despite constituting more than half of the state’s labor market.

At PSE&G, we are committed to fostering a clean energy economy that creates opportunities for everyone. Through longstanding partnerships with the state, unions, public sectors and community organizations, we are actively building a clean energy workforce that mirrors the diversity of the communities we serve. The PSE&G Clean Energy Jobs Program, launched in 2020 in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development and various local partners, aims to address these challenges directly. One key aspect of the program is the PSE&G-sponsored On the Job Training (OJT) program. This initiative provides training and resources to underrepresented communities, preparing participants for careers in the fast-growing energy efficiency sector, thereby ensuring economic opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds.

Carolina Ramos

“This program is great because it really shows you that there are so many different opportunities … no matter what you’re interested in.”

Carolina Ramos, Senior Analyst – Cadmus.

As part of this program, we’ve witnessed inspiring journeys of individuals like Carolina Ramos, a first-generation college graduate with a passion for environmental stewardship. Graduating from Rutgers University with a degree in environmental studies, Carolina was deeply connected to the importance of sustainability. It was through a former community partner, the Latino Action Network Foundation, that Carolina learned about the Clean Energy Jobs Program, which opened doors to her career in clean energy.

Carolina’s transition from roles in Jersey City’s recycling and sustainability departments to her current position as a senior analyst at Cadmus, a global technical and strategic consultancy, exemplifies her dedication and growth. At Cadmus, she plays a vital part in evaluating clean energy initiatives, contributing to sustainability efforts and promoting inclusivity within the energy sector.

Gwendolyn Smalls

Gwendolyn Smalls got involved with the program while seeking something new and different after focusing on her family for the past decade. As a client of the Urban League of Essex County, Gwen heard of the PSE&G sponsored OJT program from a counselor, applied and began the program in November 2021. Graduating in 2022, she honed her skills and ultimately found her place at Encore LED. Today, Gwen thrives as a program analyst at Encore LED, contributing to New Jersey’s clean energy initiatives.

“I’m proud to be a part of clean energy in New Jersey. In addition to industry knowledge, the Clean Energy Jobs Program training has provided me with valuable transferable skills”

Similarly, Jada Rodriguez’s journey showcases the transformative power of our program. A graduate of the third cohort of the OJT program, Jada now excels as an HVAC service technician for The Ice-Man.

“I didn’t have any prior HVAC experience before joining the PSE&G-sponsored OJT program. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up – paid training with no experience necessary,” said Jada.

Throughout the 16-week program, Jada received hands-on training, which prepared her for her current role. Now, she is back in school to further her education in HVAC services, with support from her employer.

“I’d highly recommend the PSE&G-sponsored OJT program to anyone looking to gain experience and start their career in the HVAC industry,” she said.

To date the Clean Energy Jobs Program program’s track record speaks volumes. It includes:

  • Successful placement of over 2,400 individuals in clean energy jobs, with approximately 33% of those being women.
  • 59 graduates of the OJT program.
  • Training for over 100 minority-owned small businesses, 80% of which are women-owned for MWVBE certifications.
  • 600+ have been trained through our monthly training program offering BPI certification courses. Among this number, 40+ employees that have taken the BPI certification courses have been offered a clear path to advance in their careers in the clean energy industry.

We are honored to celebrate the achievements of these remarkable women, who are not only making waves, but also reshaping and diversifying the clean energy sector in New Jersey.

Join us in building a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the clean energy industry, as we work together to shape a brighter, cleaner tomorrow.
