Established in 2017, Jola Coffee, a quaint and local gem nestled in North Caldwell, New Jersey, is the brainchild of Jodi and Larry Fundler, inspired by Jodi’s deep-rooted family history in catering. With memories of shared pots of morning coffee from her upbringing, Jodi’s desire to bring exceptional coffee experiences to others led her to create the business alongside her husband.
Now a fixture in North Caldwell for almost seven years, Jodi and Larry embarked on updates to their establishment over a year ago, aiming to reduce energy consumption and cut costs. Upon learning about our Direct Install Program—an initiative designed to assist businesses in reducing energy usage and environmental impact through cost-effective equipment upgrades—they decided to participate.
Committed to both energy efficiency and fostering a welcoming environment for their community, Jola Coffee opted to replace their traditional exterior lighting with an energy-efficient LED lamp. This upgrade not only brightened the perimeter of Jola Coffee but also aimed to reduce the establishment’s energy consumption.
Another key aspect of the upgrade was the installation of the two ductless mini-split HVAC systems. These systems, known for energy efficiency, zoning capabilities and flexible installation, were strategically selected to ensure precise temperature control. By opting for ductless mini-splits, Jola Coffee effectively reduced unnecessary energy consumption and is making an investment in the comfort of its clientele.
Completed in just 10 days, the energy-efficient upgrades facilitated through the program provided Jola Coffee with an opportunity to enhance operational efficiency while minimizing its carbon footprint. The total project cost of $8,000 might have posed a significant investment for a small business like Jola Coffee. However, our financial incentives, which covered 80% of the total expenses, proved to be invaluable. With no up-front out of pocket costs to the business owner, Jolla Coffee was able to benefit greatly, underscoring our commitment to energy efficiency while bolstering local businesses and helping them thrive.

We’ve observed tangible savings in our energy usage and costs. Furthermore, collaborating with PSE&G was a seamless experience, and the project was efficiently completed within days.

“Ensuring the comfort and safety of our patrons is important to us as a small business, and the completed work has indeed offered them a cool space in the summer months and a secure environment year-round,” Jodie said. “Since the installations, we’ve observed tangible savings in our energy usage and costs. Furthermore, collaborating with PSE&G was a seamless experience, and the project was efficiently completed within days. Now, we feel gratified knowing that our small contribution to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly establishment may hopefully have a ripple effect, making a greater impact on the environment.”
Jola Coffee’s participation in our Direct Install Program showcases the positive outcomes that can emerge when local businesses prioritize energy efficiency. As more businesses follow in the footsteps of Jola Coffee, the community can look forward to a greener and more energy-efficient future.
