No heat? What to do if your boiler pilot light goes out

We understand how stressful it can be when your heating system suddenly stops working – especially during cold winter weather.

If your boiler’s pilot light goes out or your heating system isn’t working as it should, please don’t try to relight it yourself. Heating equipment is more complex than it may seem, and attempting a fix on your own can create safety risks.

Recently, a customer attempted to relight their boiler and experienced what’s known as a backflash, a rare situation in which unburned fuel ignites all at once. The incident resulted in minor injuries to the customer and serves as an important reminder that heating systems should always be handled by trained professionals

You do not need to be enrolled in a WorryFree Protection Plan for us to inspect your heating equipment or relight your boiler. We provide this service at no cost for the first 15 minutes of your appointment.

If a repair or replacement part is needed and you’re not enrolled in WorryFree, you can choose to pay for the service  on your monthly bill using our flexible interest free payment options — no contract required.

Our licensed technicians will safely assess the situation, make any needed repairs and ensure your system is running efficiently before they leave your home. Let us take care of it so you can stay warm with peace of mind.

If your heating system isn’t working properly, call 1-800-436-PSEG (7734) or schedule a service appointment through your MyAccount portal or our PSE&G mobile app.

And remember: If you ever smell gas, leave the building immediately and move at least 350 feet away. Once you’re at a safe distance, call 911 and then call us at 1-800-880-PSEG (7734). You will never be charged for reporting a potential gas leak.

We’re here to help you stay safe, warm and informed all winter long. Visit worryfree.pseg.com to learn more about and explore our WorryFree Protection Plans.

PSE&G WorryFree Services are only available to customers located in PSE&G’s service territory. Similar services can be provided by service companies other than PSE&G. A list of those service companies may be available from public listings, including telephone directories. Customers are not required to purchase WorryFree Services to receive safe, adequate and proper utility service or to take part in utility energy efficiency programs. WorryFree Plans do not provide for gas emergency service. If you detect a gas odor, have a gas appliance that will not shut off, or have a carbon monoxide concern, contact your local gas utility. PSE&G will provide to our gas customers, free of charge, such services as gas leak investigations and other safety-related services.
