Transforming careers through on-the-job training

Ready to build a career or looking for a career change and enjoy hands-on work? Look no further than our On-the-Job training program. The program, which is offered through our collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development and local partner organizations, provides training and resources to prepare participants for careers in New Jersey’s fast-growing energy efficiency sector.

For Alexander Obregon, a recent graduate of our OJT program, the journey from delivering food for DoorDash to becoming an HVAC technician has been nothing short of transformative. With no prior experience in HVAC technology, Alexander was eager to step into a field that not only offered new challenges but also the potential for long-term growth. Before joining the program, he worked alongside his father repairing and power washing cars – his passion for hands-on work motivated him to explore new opportunities.

In April 2023, Alexander joined the 16-week OJT program – a decision that would impact his career trajectory. Throughout the program, he worked closely mentors who helped him realize his potential and encouraged him to push beyond his limits. “I’m really grateful for the opportunity,” he shared, reflecting on the importance of having mentors who supported his development.

After completing the program, Alexander’s career took a significant leap forward. He secured a position with RNC Mechanical as an HVAC technician, where he focuses on construction-related HVAC activities. While the work differs from the hands-on installations he did during his training, Alexander acknowledges the value of the foundational skills he gained. “OJT is like boot camp,” he explained. “Once you graduate, you’re ready to actually go, and you know what to expect on your next journey.”

Alexander learned the technical skills needed for a career in HVAC and developed personally, growing more open and confident in his abilities. The OJT experience broadened his understanding of the field and sparked an interest in energy efficiency and building science, a discipline he hopes to make a positive impact on.

For anyone considering participating in the program, Alexander offered a piece of advice: “Keep going and learn as much as you can. It can be challenging, but it’s a very rewarding career.” He emphasized the importance of teamwork and vigilance in such a demanding field, but also highlighted the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a project successfully.

Thanks to our On-the-Job Training program, Alexander has found a new path, and with it, the tools and confidence to continue growing in his career. He looks forward to a future that benefits him professionally and allows him to contribute to a more sustainable world.
