Although I am not an alum of a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), I am surrounded by HBCU pride thanks to my loved ones and friends who are HBCU alumni like my sister (Shaw University), my niece (Hampton University), my daughter-n-law (Morgan State University) and many others who are also members of the Divine Nine sororities and fraternities. My granddaughter will also be part of this community, as she embarks on her journey at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (NCA&T) this year.
I feel a sense of pride and community whenever I attend an HBCU game or homecoming. Thanks to PSEG’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), I, along with an HBCU graduate mom, had the opportunity to attend the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic at the Prudential Center this year and it was awe-inspiring.

We enjoyed watching Grambling State University beat Jackson State University and Hampton defeat Howard University. It warmed my heart to see the NCA&T chorus perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and to see Actor Michael B. Jordan speak to the crowd during half time, thanking Newark, New Jersey, for representing the HBCU community.
As a longtime Newark resident and parent of three graduates of the Newark school system, seeing the Newark high school students presented with scholarships by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to attend college was a special moment. I am happy to see organizations help remove the barriers that can prevent emerging leaders from attending college due to lack of funding. Years ago, my eldest son was accepted to Hampton and NCA&T. However, at the time, I could not afford to send him to an out-of-state school and was not aware of organizations like Thurgood Marshall.

It was my pleasure to attend the Legacy Classic with other employees and guests to show representation and support to three of our strategic partner HBCUs where we recruit interns and graduates. I’m glad to work for a company now that both supports HBCUs through PSEG Foundation grants and CSR sponsorships and builds partnerships with them. In my role as manager of strategic diversity sourcing, our team is dedicated to outreach and recruiting with community and university partners to hire diverse talent.
