Why PSE&G is replacing older gas pipes, relocating some gas meters and investing in infrastructure that serves 1.9 million gas customers in New Jersey.
Ever wonder why gas pipes are being replaced in neighborhoods across New Jersey, or why some gas meters are being moved outside?
If you’ve noticed construction crews replacing gas pipes in your neighborhood or moving gas meters outside homes, you’re seeing work that’s helping keep New Jersey’s gas system safe and reliable.
These upgrades help reduce the risk of leaks, strengthen our infrastructure and help ensure safe, dependable natural gas service for the 1.9 million customers who rely on it every day. All while maintaining the lowest residential gas rates in the region for our customers.
Through our Gas System Modernization Program (GSMP), we’ve already replaced more than 1,600 miles of gas mains across New Jersey over the past decade. We’re continuing that progress to help ensure safe, reliable service not only for today but for generations to come.
Why are we replacing gas pipes?
Because some of the gas pipes serving our communities today are more than 100 years old, replacing them with modern materials helps improve safety, reliability and resiliency.
For more than 120 years, we have proudly delivered the energy that keeps your homes warm and bright, businesses running and communities connected across New Jersey. Over that time, we’ve learned a lot about how infrastructure ages and how new technology can help us serve you even better.
PSE&G remains the nation’s largest single operator of cast iron gas mains. While those pipes served New Jersey well for decades, older materials are more susceptible to corrosion, cracking and leaks as they age.
That’s why we’re replacing older cast iron and unprotected steel pipes with newer, more durable materials designed to improve reliability, reduce leaks and strengthen the safety of the gas system you depend on every day.
What does this mean for you, our customers?
Once construction is complete, these upgrades may not be visible — but their benefits last for decades.
Modernizing our gas system provides lasting benefits, including:
- Improved safety: Modern pipes and equipment help reduce the risk of leaks.
- Greater reliability: New infrastructure helps provide more consistent service, including during severe weather.
- Enhanced resiliency: The upgraded system is better equipped to withstand flooding and other extreme weather.
- Environmental benefits: Modern pipes help reduce methane emissions while improving system performance.
Simply put, these investments help ensure your energy service is dependable today and ready for tomorrow.
Why are we relocating gas meters?
As part of this modernization work, you may also notice that gas meters are being relocated from inside homes and businesses to outside locations. While this may seem like a small change, it plays an important role in improving safety and service.
Moving gas meters outside gives our crews faster access during emergencies, allowing them to safely shut off gas more quickly when necessary. It also reduces the risk of gas building up inside a structure in the event of a leak.
Outside meters are also more convenient not only for us, but for you, too. Because our crews can access them without entering your home or business, routine inspections and maintenance are often simpler to schedule while reducing the need for in-home appointments. The ability to complete outside meter inspections also results in long-term cost savings by maximizing operational efficiencies.
It’s one more way we’re making New Jersey’s gas system safer while improving service for the people who rely on it every day.
How do these upgrades make New Jersey’s gas system more reliable?
Energy needs continue to grow, and keeping New Jersey’s gas system strong requires ongoing investment.
Natural gas continues to play an important role in providing reliable, affordable energy for homes, businesses and communities across New Jersey, and we continue to maintain the lowest gas bills in the state and region. This reinforces the company’s commitment to providing safe, reliable and cost-effective energy to 1.9 million gas customers across New Jersey and caring for our customers. That’s why we’re continuing to modernize our infrastructure — helping ensure your homes and businesses have safe, reliable natural gas service today and for years to come.
