For all you “do-it-yourselfers” out there, here’s a short list of easy improvements and cleaning tips you can use to keep your appliances running smoothly.
- Replace the filter in your HVAC every three months. This is an inexpensive way to maintain your home’s air quality and remove microparticles like pollen, pet dander, smoke, bacteria and even viruses from the air.
- Have your air conditioning unit checked. Annual maintenance can extend the useful life of your home’s AC system by several years. It’s smart to have your unit serviced in springtime before usage increases during the summer.
- Maintain your water heater. Hot water is key to a comfortable home. Keep it flowing by draining your tank and removing sediment – and by flushing your water heater every six months to prevent corrosion and valve blockages.
- Tidy up your refrigerator inside and out. Clearing dust from coils helps cool your refrigerator more efficiently and prevents breakdowns. Also, removing unwanted or expired items allows cold air to circulate better inside the unit.
- Keep your washing machine clean. A quick way to do this is to add white vinegar to a spray bottle and spray the inside of the washer drum. Wipe down the drum and the rubber gaskets with a microfiber cloth. (You’ll be amazed at the results.)
- Don’t forget your dryer, either. Clean your lint filter after every load to keep warm air circulating, and make sure your exhaust vent is clear. If your dryer has a water tank, empty the tank after each drying cycle.
- Clean your dishwasher every month. Remove debris from the drain, put a bowl of white vinegar on the top rack, then run a wash cycle on the hottest setting. Afterward, sprinkle a cup of baking soda on the bottom of your unit and run a hot water cycle.
- Prepare your outdoor natural gas grill for summer. Clean your grill grates, burners, drip pans and exterior to remove grease that interferes with starting and cooking. Basic household items like a brass-bristle brush, soapy water, toothpicks and tin foil can do the trick.
