PSEG employee works to fight racism through fellowship

At PSEG, we are committed to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and the communities we serve. We are proud to join a new partnership, CEO Action for Racial Equity, and that PSEG’s Irene Muldowney will have the opportunity to join other professionals from more than 100 organizations as a CEO Action for Racial Equity fellow.

For one year, Muldowney will step away from her role on PSEG’s Environmental Health & Safety team to help address systemic racism and social injustice with a focus on education.

Despite progress in reducing racial disparities in education over the past three decades, studies show that fewer Black students graduate from high school than their White, Asian and Hispanic counterparts and, of those who do, fewer go on to receive a four-year college degree. This can contribute to racial disparities in job opportunities and income later in life. 

“Increasing the quality and accessibility of education for everyone in this country could really help relieve the burden we currently face,” said Muldowney, emphasizing the stresses that COVID-19 has placed on access to high-quality education. “I’m hoping our work will have a long-term impact on equity and opportunities for students, particularly those in disadvantaged socioeconomic and racial segments.”

While Muldowney will miss her PSEG teammates, she didn’t hesitate when deciding to accept the fellowship.

“I need to know that all the energy and passion that I bring to my work is helping to benefit something greater than myself or my career,” Muldowney said. “This fellowship is an extraordinary opportunity – it is a gift that PSEG has given to me to work for social justice and racial equity and contribute to impactful, long-term change.”
